SAVE THE DATE! LUMEN Festival, June 25th

Woman at work, video projection

I will be participating in the next LUMEN International video art and projection festival.
LUMEN will take place on June 25th, 2011 on the northern, industrial, Staten Island waterfront site of the Lighthouse Museum. I will be presenting a new video titled Woman at work.

Woman at work is a giant two frame animation projected onto the side of an industrial brick building. Two frames are the minimum number of images needed to create a movie. Woman at work is inspired from old-fashioned commercial neon signs using double images flashing alternately to create the illusion of movement in the distance.

The visual of Woman at work is a middle-aged woman working out. In the first frame of the animation, she stands with her arms extended in front of her. In the second frame, she squats with her legs bent. The images are two pink line drawings. Visible in the distance when entering the alley of the LUMEN festival site, Woman at work looks like a giant commercial neon sign flashing in the cityscape.

Woman at work is a visual metaphor about how women are alienated by society’s pressure to have a perfect body.
